Derby, Derby, Derby

Over at the Arsenal Offside—and one would presume at Tottenham Hotspur Offside as well—we’re getting psyched for this weekend’s North London Derby. The Gunners visit Spurs for bragging rights and a precious three points. Since Thierry Henry never lost to Spurs in an Arsenal shirt, and since Thierry’s gone to sunny Spain, maybe this is Spurs’ year for a win. Or maybe not. And who knows – Martin Jol might still be Spurs coach on Saturday!

I’ve always wanted to have an archenemy named Terence so we could stage the Terence – Trent Derby. (Oh, like you don’t know what I’m talking about.) But until that glorious day, tell me what you think are the best derbies around. There are, after all, websites devoted exclusively to the subject. You can even take a derby quiz if you’re feeling lucky.

We already know about your Milan – Inter and River – Boca derbies. So what great rivalry is flying under the radar that you just gotta tell us about? I’ll go first: Barcelona (de Guayaquil) – Emelec, the Classico de Astillero and Ecuador’s best rivalry.

Portland Timbers vs seattle sounders (USLD1). This is so far under the radar we can't even see the radar from here.

Every time we go to seattle for a game they have more and more cops and rent-a-chumps waiting to surround and menace us. If both teams take care of business in the playoffs we'll meet in the championship game.

in mexico, rayados-tigres is a big deal, that never gets the press of the clasico between chivas and america but is still chock-full of passion.

Yeah - my favorite derby is Atletico vs. Real Madrid, but it doesn't realy fly under the Radar. I think that CSKA Moscow v. Spartak Moscow deserves mention, though. CSKA is short of Central Sports Club of the Army, and Spartak, who were histrically tied to the food industry, has a fan base who boast: "who are we? We are the meat!"

I joke, of course. I'm a fan of the Madrid and Barcelona derbies, even though they aren't the biggest in the world.

Ok, I'll go with my family's traditional club in Rio Flamengo (that's the half of the family from Rio, that is -- the other side are from Sao Paulo and they support Corinthians) v. the local rivals Fluminense. I've gone to the maracana to see these two clubs play and always had a great time. The times I've gone there've been no incidents, just a lot of heckling, lots of crazy banners and costumes, and many creatively obscene rhyming chants between fans. Helluva an atmosphere.
