Adebayor Tells Us What We Already Knew: It’s All About The Money.
By: chris | May 13th, 2009
We’d like to think that footballers have an overwhelming attachment to the shirt or that their love of the game supersedes all. But they don’t and it doesn’t. At least not typically.
No need to sit down and catch your breath for this one: Emmanuel Adebayor doesn’t play for Arsenal or the fans or his employers. He plays for his wallet.
Adebayor speaking to BBC Africa (via an outfit which is not the BBC):
“It is not true, it is about money,” Adebayor is quoted as telling BBC Africa Sports editor Farayi Mungazi when asked whether it is true when footballers say that playing for a certain club is not about the wages.
“You are talking about in life and it is about money. When we are young, of course we played because we loved the game, we play because we were passionate about the game.
“But now as soon as you reach a stage where you are professional and playing Champions League, after all those things we are talking about money.
“If it is not because of money, what am I going to be playing for Arsenal for? If it is not because of money I don’t think I would go to Arsenal to play. I would stay in my country, I would stay in Lome where everyone loves me.
“If it’s not because of money, I would not have come to Europe.”
Even though this comes as no surprise, it’s still unlikely to endear Emmanuel to Arsenal fans, who are already enjoying his constant flirtations with Milan (supplementing his lack of goals in the league).
The snubs of ManCity breed some hope, but no great footballer wants to play for a team which has lost more than its won and will struggle mightily to get into Europe at all over the next couple years. As Adebayor said, once you’ve reached a certain pinnacle it’s simply about the cash.
And there you have it: blunt honesty from an athlete telling us what we already knew but never seem to hear. We could say it’s something the world could use more of, but the old adage “his feet aren’t connected to his brain” suddenly starts ringing about. Best to keep these to a minimum, then.

Tell this to Joseba Etxeberria, after he stops crying.

Arsenal really should have cashed in on him last season when he was playing well and could have demanded a big fee. I expect him to go this summer though, Arsene is usually pretty good at this kind of sale (see Henry, Viera etc)

can’t blame him. in this world every man for himself. those who think otherwise are delusional, few season’s and arsenal will kick him out of the door, it won’t matter if he loves them or not. this is a business first, sport 2nd

If a player is at a club that he loves and hes making a “good” amount of money (let’s say money you and me will probably never see), then there should be no reason why he should move on to another club solely because they paid double. Unless of course that team is a top team in a league, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man U, and so on…

What he’s saying is common sense of course it’s about the money.
Athletes have a whole bunch of public relations managers behind them trying to make everything they say into something noble but the fact of the matter is money speaks louder.
Every man has his price the only reason some transfers dont go through is because of other issues but of course those smart PR managers will find a way to twist a failed negotiation into statements of loyalty.

He is being honest about something that we all have known.
In every day life we achieve to pursue bigger paydays.
But it would be nice to have accountability. Adebayor has been injured quite often and his goal production has been anemic, so has he earned his pay like the rest of the working class? We all get “DELETED” from our jobs once we are of no value to that institution so why a club releasing a useless player should be blamed?
Good riddance he doesn’t deserve to wear the shirt!Posted from

I think this post is missing the point of the quote. My take on what he is saying is that he plays in Europe for the money. If there was more money in football in Africa, he would have stayed there. I dont think he was snubbing Arsenal only stating an economic fact: anyone who wants to make real money playing football has to go to England or Europe. He wanted to make real money, so he had to leave Africa. Where is the controversy?

I’ll be doing a 5000-word essay on why this man should never wear a Chelsea shirt tomorrow.
