AlfonsoAfonso Alves Get His Pressure Work Permit

By: Daryl | February 5th, 2008

Alves gets work permitMiddlesbrough fans rejoice, for your goal-scoring messiah has received a work permit. Alfonso Afonso Alves - the £12 million Brazilian - had to sit out the Tyne-Tee derby this past weekend while papers were shuffled. But now the former Heerenveen man has got the all clear and could make his debut at home to Fulham this coming Saturday. The basic theory is that Middlesbrough need goals (Jeremie Aliadiere and Mido not packing enough punch between them) and Alves has got ‘em. He made goalkeepers sad 45 times in 40 Eredivisie games over the last two years, including his famous seven goal haul against Heracles. But talk about pressure…

It’s hard enough making your way in the Premier League, but to come in and be expected to start scoring straight away is a big ask. All respect to the Eredivisie and the Swedish league (where Alves was busting nets before moving to Holland) but the Premier League is a step up. And playing for a not very good Premier League team like Middlesbrough is another step up.

Just to make Alves’ life extra difficult, Eredivisie’s AZ Alkmaar have launched an appeal against his move to ‘Boro. The club claim that Alves had already put pen to paper on a contract with Alkmaar and that he belongs to them.

“We have a totally valid contract with Alves and we want to make that clear with FIFA. FIFA will then judge what should happen,” said Alkmaar spokesman Klaas Wilting, who did not rule out legal action.

“The contract we have is clear: Alves must come to Alkmaar,” he added, saying that “you can’t sign two contracts”.

Best we can do is wish Alfonso Afonso Alves the best of luck. He’ll need it as he attempts to maintain his strikerate on an unappetizing diet of Stewart Downing crosses and Gary O’Neill through balls, while the prospect of legal action hangs over his head.
