All Bets are off for Martin Jol’s Future
By: Bob | August 21st, 2007
One of my favorite traditions this time of year is to follow the managerial deathwatch. There is something perversely satisfying about watching others sweat bullets while they are in danger of losing their jobs. Some day karma is going to come back and bite me in the arse for enjoying this, but until then I can take comfort in knowing that there are others out there who are even more deranged than I am. They are the people who look to profit off of manger sackings.
Betting firms in the UK are no longer taking bets that Spurs manager Martin Jol will be the first Premier League manager given his walking papers this season. Getting sacked from the sack race is a sure sign that Jol is on the hottest of hot seats.
Fortunately, the very same betting firms will gladly take your money if you are interested in betting on who will replace Jol.
After all the weekend speculation and clandestine meetings, Seville’s coach Juande Ramos is the favourite at just 6/4 followed by former Spurs striker Jurgen Klinsmann and Italian Marcelo Lippi at 6/1.
Amongst the homegrown managerial talent Blackburn’s Mark Hughes is considered the front-runner at 11/1 with Harry Redknapp perhaps a surprise contender at 18/1.
Spurs have a reputation of bringing back former players and managers and Paddy Power has Glenn Hoddle at 50/1, alongside Gary Lineker, with Terry Venables at 80/1 and Gazza the 250/1 outsider.
I’d put a few dollars down on Gazza being the next Spurs manager just for shits and giggles but I’ve already mortgaged the house to bet that Angelina Jolie will leave Brad Pitt by the end of the year. She is sooooo ready to dump him for me. Better get your bets in now before they take that one off the board too.
