Allardyce is Stuck With the Players He’s Got (Because He Signed Them)
By: Daryl | December 27th, 2007Things are looking bad for Sam Allardyce after his Newcastle team lost 1-0 to Wigan yesterday. It was supposed to be the perfect marriage, up and coming English coach with a sound methodology whipping a fanatically supported but underachieving team into shape. But the reality is that Big Sam’s ugly but effective Bolton tactics haven’t caught on at Newcastle, a place where fans are used to something a little easier on the eye. Maybe the Toon Army would be more forgiving if the results were good, but the results have been pretty poor. And Allardyce just made things worse for himself. When asked if he was happy that his job security was in the hands of his players, Sam responded with “No, not really. But these are the players I’ve got.”
Not the biggest vote of confidence is it? But hang on, didn’t Big Sam spend a fair bit of money this summer to reshape the Newcastle team? He bought in Mark Viduka, Alan Smith, Geremi, Joey Barton, Habib Beye, Caçapa, David Rozehnal and the little seen José Enrique. That’s nearly a new team, so if Allardyce has a problem with the players at his disposal maybe he should stop and think about how those players came to be at his disposal.
