Avram Grant Hates Mondays
By: Daryl | November 20th, 2007
Avram Grant’s paperwork problems just got a little worse. Despite his 21 years of coaching experience, including winning titles in Israel and managing the national team for four years, Grant lacks the all-important UEFA Pro License. He was given special dispensation until around Christmas after initially replacing Jose Mourinho this season, but that honeymoon period is running out and UEFA want to see some action. So the Chelsea boss has signed up for a 90 hour course, which takes place Monday nights from January to March 2008. No problem. Except that Grant lives in London and the classes are in Tel Aviv.
They actually take place in an office at the Ramat Gan Stadium, where Israel did England a favour on Saturday by beating Russia 2-1. There are definitely worse places to visit if you’re a proud Israeli football manager. But imagine flying all that way to listen to things you probably already know, just so you can have an extra badge to sew onto your tracksuit. With Abramovich’s billions, Grant will likely be flying luxuriously (I’m guessing keys to the private jet?) but still.
As well as being a pain in Avram’s ass, the classes also pose genuine logistical problems for Chelsea. For example, what if they have a Tuesday Champions League game? Grant won’t be able to take training or even be around the day before the game. And when Chelsea play on Sunday afternoons he’ll basically have to head straight for airport when the final whistle blows. Maybe it will all work out, but my guess is that Grant will have a new found appreciation for Garfield before the end of the season.
