Be Afraid Premier League Defenders, Be Very Afraid

By: Daryl | January 15th, 2008

Didier hearts NicRemember when Didier Drogba was definitely leave Chelsea? Bad news for Blues fans, but I’m sure Premier League defenders up and down the country were counting the days ’til his departure to AC Milan. Well now it seems he’s looking forward to terrorizing Premier League defenders, for another few months at least and maybe longer, as Drogba has developed a purely platonic football hard-on for Nicolas Anelka (which may or may not be what he’s pointing to there.) “I’ll love to play alongside Anelka and form a terrifying partnership,” is what Double-D told The Sun, and who can argue with him?

Seems one of Cheslea’s big problems in recent years has been an over-reliance on Drogba. The tactics under Mourinho (one striker, two attacking wingers) were built around his game, and though Andriy Shevchenko’s arrival was meant to take the pressure off the Ivorian, it really just made things more complicated. The Ukrainian was incapable of filling Drogba’s boots as the lone striker, and equally incapable for forming a partnership with Drogba.

But Anelka’s arrival will not only provide Chelsea with another striker capable of being the point man, it also offers the possibility of a productive partnership. “You know I speak French too, so we’ll be buddies,” says the Drog. “Perhaps we can use the language to our advantage during a match.” Uh oh.

Drogba is already back in goalscoring form ahead of the African Cup of Nations (although that Kuwaiti wall did make things way too easy for him) and Anelka looked the real deal on his Chelsea debut against Spurs. So be afraid Premier League defenders, be very afraid.

I have never, ever been a Chelsea fan. Until now. I Can.Not.Wait to see this partnership.

(But when they play Arsenal, they’d have a better chance of a sneak attack if they speak English.)

Daryl, he’s either pointing to that or he’s trying really hard to sell Samsungs.

More importantly: great! My first thought when I heard that Anelka was Chelsea-bound was “Please let the Drogba deal fall through, please let the Drogba deal fall through.” It will be fascinating to watch them play together, even if it’s only for a few months.

And Laurie, I’m not a Chelsea fan, either.

It will be interesting, that’s for sure. (I believe all the Arsenal defenders bar Hoyte are native French speakers. Even the ones that aren’t French.)

They should be very fun to watch together. As you say, could make a mess out of some Prem defenses. *searching for Derby fixture*

Well, now he’s in all the papers saying he wants to play with Eto’o, presumably for Barca. You have to give Drobga credit: he’s absolutely consistent in the way he never holds an opinion for more than 24 hours without contradicting it in the press.

When I lived in Argentina, some of my yankee friends and I used to pull that “speak a foreign language on the pitch” crap. It only works if you’re better at soccer than your opponents. In other words, don’t waste your time.
