Ben Thatcher’s Elbow has Never Met a Face it didn’t Like
By: Bob | September 5th, 2006
After watching the video of Manchester City’s Ben Thatcher introducing himself to Pedro Mendes for the 7,000th time, we decided that Mr. Thatcher might not be the nicest player on the pitch.
We aren’t too surprised to learn and to see that his elbow has been used before in a match with similar effect on an opponent’s face. Ralph Welch, a 19-year-old Rovers player, had his mug smashed in (video) by Thatcher during a reserve game in February.
Said Welch: “I have no doubt Ben Thatcher set out to hurt me. He knew exactly what he was doing. He has done it before and he will do it again. It’s almost like his trademark.”
Welch is now trying to involve the authorities since he claims his pleas to England’s FA have fallen on deaf ears.
Thatcher’s trademark elbow has already gotten him suspended for a couple of games and likely will land him additional punishment when the FA disciplinary committee meets to discuss things on September 12.
