Benitez Finally Gets a Premier League Win Over Man Utd
By: Daryl | September 13th, 2008
It’s been a long time coming but Liverpool finally beat Man Utd at Anfield today for the first time since 2001. And for Rafa Benitez it was the first time he’d gotten the better of Fergie in the Premier League. And he did so with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard starting on the bench.
Gerrard came on for the last 20, but Torres stayed sitting down as Liverpool beat their north west rivals 2-1 at Anfield.
Things got off to a great start for Man Utd, when debutant Dimitar Berbatov set up Carlos Tevez just three minutes in:
But though Liverpool’s 27th minute equalizer will go down as a Wes Brown o.g., it was really Edwin van der Sar’s fault for palming it straight at Brown from close range:
Then, 15 minutes from time, Dirk Kuyt squared for Ryan Babel, and that bit of double Dutch was enough to give Rafa his first Premier League win over Fergie:

Man Utd’s disappointing day out was complete when Nemanja Vidic was sent off for a second yellow one minute from time.

Things just went from bad to worse for united. Own Goal due to the aging vds, injry to carrick which has ruled him out for the Villareal fixture wednesday, and now missing Vidic for the Chelsea match looming in the future.

Oh, maybe not. Carvalho just equalized. (And now I’m off to TV5Monde to watch Nice-Lyon. I’m so glad summer’s over!!!)

The loss of Vidic next week is a huge loss for United who cannot afford to lose to Chelsea and Liverpool back to back.

I’m taking some consolation that Chelsea will be missing JT in the fixture.
