Cesc’s Father: Sheringham Should Act his Age

ts.jpgOne of the great things about sports is that it transcends generations. A grandfather might grow up living and dieing with every win and loss by the Shrimpers of Southend and his grandson will do the same decades later. On the pitch, a player who made his professional debut before his opponent was even born can still sometimes get the better of the youngster. I think that is pretty cool.

I’ve been following the story of Teddy Sheringham this year because I find his play largely remarkable. The 40-year-old West Ham striker has been playing like a kid again and he has been one of the few bright lights on an otherwise dim Hammers season. Maybe it is the young lady he is hanging out with or maybe he just has found his hunger for the sport again, but whatever the case Sheringham has been fun to watch. It was even fun to watch him take a run at Arsenal wunderkind Cesc Fabregas (another one of my favorite players).

Not everyone enjoyed Sheringham’s role in the Arsenal meltdown last weekend. Fabregas’ father, who happens to be a year younger than Sheringham, suggested it is time for Sir Teddy to act like the middle age man that he is.

It is heartwarming to see Fabregas’ father come to his son’s defense like he is protecting his Cesc from a schoolyard bully stealing his lunch money, but frankly I couldn’t disagree more. I hope Sheringham never acts his age and that he continues to play like he is 40 going on 25.
