Chris Morgan Charged with (Kind of) Violent Conduct
By: Bob | January 3rd, 2007
Normally when I read a headline about violent conduct images of a player leaping cleats first into an opponent, bloody decapitation and the cell phone recorded video of a dictator’s hanging come to mind. As is the case with actual bodily harm and gross bodily harm, violent conduct is a term that means one thing to some people and entirely something different to others.
Take the case of Sheffield United captain Chris Morgan. He has been charged with violent conduct by the FA after his actions in a match against Arsenal on Saturday. Morgan’s crime was to take a punch at Arsenal forward Robin van Persie behind the ball and out of sight of the referee.
Sounds pretty devious and worthy of a suspension, right? Certainly this type of action is deserving of the label “violent conduct,” right?
When I take a look at the video of the incident below I see a bit of a cheap shot but one that falls well short of being violent despite the efforts of van Persie to make it appear so. We’ll have to wait until Friday to see if the FA disciplinary committee has a different definition of violent conduct.
