Cristiano Ronaldo Takes George Best’s Record

By: Daryl | March 19th, 2008

ronaldo celebrates againThis is insanity. It’s like the Premier League is The Matrix and Cristiano Ronaldo is Keanu Reeves. C-Ron went into this evening’s Man Utd vs Bolton Lancashire derby with 31 goals in all competitions, just one behind George Best’s scoring record of 32 from the wing.

And after eight minutes Ronaldo was level, when he kept his head in the middle of a goalmouth scramble, and found the top corner by (maybe a little luckily) volleying the ball into the ground and up into the top corner. No doubts about his second though. He struck a free kick from distance that moved in the air and flew past Ali Al-Habsi, to take Ronaldo clear of Best with 33 goals in all competitions from out the wing. And it’s still only March.

And there’s more good news for C-Ron, if he’s planning on taking this Best-emulation quest a step further. Now that the San Jose Earthquakes are back together, he has the option of signing for Frank Yallop’s team and trying to recreate this:

If Ronaldo wasn’t a fucking pretty boy douche, he’d already be one of the best of all-time in my books. Alas, he’s a fucking pretty boy douche. But those free kicks…

The commentary on that video is laughably atrocious. Not much has changed in that area, I see…

I’ve watched videos on cristiano ronaldo’s technique many times, and it’s so unnatural for me to replicate. the way he strikes the ball is a result of years upon years of practicing essentially what is the wrong form of striking a ball. but he makes it work, it’s ridiculous.

What is ridiculous is an american talking about the notion of what’s unnatural in football… oops, meant soccer, forgot you guys refer to football as something else… hmm, maybe that was the problem. :P
I don’t like Ronaldo’s personality either, but he is THE BEST right now, actually he’s better than BEST (yes, my pun was intended :S), it’s all nice and dandy to do what the video shows in 1970’s MLS (i don’t know what it was called then), but try that in today’s EPL. :)

C Ronaldo´s free kicks will be known as “The Rocket-Ronaldo”, instilling fear and terror in the enemy´s goal… :-)
It´s not every day a 40 year old record gets broken…

best only scored that goal because he was playing in america where the defenders have no clue what they’re doing!
