Darren Fletcher Can’t Get No Respect

By: Daryl | March 12th, 2008

Darren Fletcher toilet doorIf you’ve seen Donnie Darko, you’ll know that “cellar door” is the most beautiful phrase in the English language. But “toilet door” isn’t. Especially not for Darren Fletcher. The Scottish midfielder apparently used the facilities immediately after playing in Man Utd’s Champion’s League win over Lyon last week, only for the toilet door to fall off its hinges and hit him in the head. The poor fella was knocked unconscious and needed stitches, which probably explains why he didn’t feature in last weekend’s FA Cup defeat against Portsmouth.

Nick on Man Utd Offside is ruling out sabotage for now, which leaves bad luck as the only explanation.

Seems somehow typical of Fletcher’s career at United, where he’s put in some solid displays and scored the occasional goal or two but probably doesn’t get the respect he deserves. Certainly not the same respect he receives in a Scotland shirt for example. And this little incident probably won’t help.

Still, it’s not the worst thing a Manchester-based player has done in a toilet this season, and if Fletcher’s feeling low then maybe this tribute from two Scottish guys celebrating him in a faux-Proclaimers style will help cheer him up.

What i'd like to know is if it hit him as he was going in or coming out, or maybe while he was in there, and his teammates found him with his shorts round his ankles. The world must know.
