El-Hadji Diouf Admits to being Deliberately Sent Off
By: Bob | October 16th, 2007
Club versus country. Country versus club. Country club versus public golf course. Gah. It is so divisive. How is a player to choose? For Bolton Wanderers El-Hadji Diouf the choice isn’t that hard. It is all about putting country before club except when he puts money before country.
If you haven’t been following the Diouf saga closely, the Senegal captain announced his retirement from international football last week. A retirement that comes at the age of 26 and with his country qualified for the African Cup of Nations and with his country having a legitimate shot at qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. Diouf cited the disorganization of Senegal’s football federation as a reason and he was tired of having to pay for his own airplane ticket while representing his country.
This is a sudden about face for a player who now admits that he has deliberately earned red cards playing for Liverpool and Bolton so that he could better represent the country which makes him pay for his own airplane tickets and which he no longer wants to represent.
“I have got myself sent off while playing for my clubs, in order that I could go off to play for the Senegal national side,” he told the News of the World.
“I have refused lots of chances to play for my clubs so that I could answer my international call-ups and play in the African Cup of Nations.”
Quit your national team and reveal your lack of loyalty to your clubs. Talk about a good way of endearing yourself to no one.
