ESPN Gets Its Premier League Ads Right

By: chris | August 20th, 2009

I think by nature, sports advertisements have to be overdone. Not everyone is going to get the subtleties and, more often than not, they’re targeting the casual fan rather than the hardcore supporter, who will show up regardless. But some go a little too far, such as this Champions League promo from last year (as well as the ridiculous advert below it). ESPN, however, seem to have gotten it right in the first go around.

The ad on top is simple, yet well done. They took a bunch of footballers and fans doing…football things…and set it to what is now a tried and true football soundtrack – The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army sung by fans. The gravelly voice saying “the best soccer in the world is now on ESPN” might be a bit over the top, but by and large, it’s a pretty good advertisement.

The second one….well, it’s just brilliant.

And suddenly, I would like to watch the Barclay’s Premier League on ESPN.

* – Little known fact: the guy standing at the bus stop with the Wolves flag is actually Daryl.

I've always felt that Daryl (if that is your real name, "Krazy George Henderson" ) would eventually make another public footy cheer appearance.

  • You can really tell which one was made for American audiences.

    I like both though.
  • Unreal, who would've thunk it?
  • I must agree, pretty brilliant stuff.
