Gianluigi Buffon’s ‘Common Assault’

By: Bob | July 31st, 2007

Tis the season for meaningless friendlies where teams like Newcastle United and Juventus go through the motions as their players try to work off their summer hangovers. Apparently Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon didn’t get the message about the relaxed vibes as you can see from the smack down he laid on Newcastle young gun Andy Carroll.

The collision left Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce none too happy.

“That was as bad as Harald Schumacher’s challenge on Patrick Battiston in the 1982 World Cup,” said Allardyce after the game. “It was more like common assault than anything you expect to see on a football field. Andy was lucky not to end up in hospital.”

A horrible tackle by a world class keeper it was, but when it comes to teeth shattering challenges Schumacher has no equal.
