God Set for Anfield Return
By: Daryl | September 29th, 2007
We’re already down to the last 16 teams in the Carling Cup, and the draw for every English manager’s fourth favourite competition was made this morning. The interesting news is as follows: Robbie Fowler, better known as God to the Liverpool faithful, will return to Anfield with Cardiff City. There’s a very good chance this will be Fowler’s last competitive appearance at Anfield. Though it’s a shame he’ll be wearing a Bluebirds shirt, there’ll no doubt be some emotional Scousers in the crowd, and at least one on the pitch.
Elsewhere Arsenal: The Next Generation travel to Bryan Robson’s Sheffield United, where the likes of Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner will get another chance to impress. Conspicuous by their absence are Manchester United’s youngsters, who were convincingly beaten 2-0 by Coventry City despite the presence of multi-million pound talent like Nani and Anderson. Apparently an unhappy Fergie is planning to loan out a few of the youngsters to get some first team experience. Probably not the expensive ones though.
There are only two all Premiership ties in the eight games, giving hope that underdogs like Coventry, Blackpool and Luton Town could make some decent Carling Cup progress.
The draw in full:
Luton Town v Everton
Portsmouth v Blackburn Rovers
Chelsea v Leicester City
Sheffield United v Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur v Blackpool
Bolton Wanderers v Manchester City
Coventry City v West Ham United
Liverpool v Cardiff City
Ties will be played the week commencing Monday 29 October.
