How To Win Fans, By Mickey Owen
By: Rob | September 20th, 2009
What a Manchester Derby. Man United took the lead three times, only to find local rivals Man City come back three times, at least untill the 95th minute, where Michael Owen forever endeared himself to the Man United support by popping up with a last gasp goal.
An absolute sucker punch for City, whose spirit was admirable as they kept going behind, but constantly worked so hard to get back into the game. There’s a bit of controversy about United scoring in the 95th minute when 4 minutes was held up at the end of the game, but as we all surely know it is a minimum of 4 minutes.
Other news, after Owen’s dramatic goal, a fan came on the pitch and managed to get into a confrontation with Craig Bellamy, which is a pity as Bellamy actually put in the performance of his life during the 90 minutes.
Darren Fletcher is another player who is beginning to come into his own, scoring two very well taken headed goals. It seemed for ages that he looked out of place in the United team, but now he looks likes the vital cog in the Champions midfield.
Ben Foster meanwhile looked lost in the Man United goal. He could be put to blame for two of the City goals (though one Rio Ferdinand has to take a bit of credit for). Disappointing for England fans hoping that he would start really well for United with Van der Saar injured, but he hasn’t established himself at all well.
But what a great game. Derby matches are sometimes disappointing as both sides are so desperate not to lose, but perhaps that early goal from Wayne Rooney set the game alight. Whatever it was, I’m glad for it.
United went up in the first few minutes thanks to Rooney’s goal, but crazy keeping from Foster allowed Tevez to play in Barry to score. Fletcher rose up and headed in his first, before a blinding goal from Craig Bellamy levelled the score. Fletcher seemed to have won the game with his second, but Rio Ferdinand’s stupid pass in the 90th minute and Fosters poor keeping allowed Bellamy to feel like the hero. Untill Owen’s 95th minute strike ended the match.
City can certainly take heart from the game. Man United were probably the better team over the 90 minutes, but City kept plugging away and never let their heads drop. I think alot of people have worried about the mentality of some of the players joining City, but they showed today there is alot of desire to go head to head with the best of them.

After all that was Adebayor, City can handle a little disappointment this week, even if it’s at the hands on Owen and United.

I fail to see how a minimum of 4 minutes turned into two extra minutes of stoppage time with a substitution being the only stoppage of play. More big 4 favoritism.

I don’t think so in this case Shane. City’s goal was after the 90, so all the celebrations etc wasted a bit of that time, as did a substitution.

89:54 GOAL – Craig Bellamy:
Man Utd 3 – 3 Man CityWhen Liverpool and Chelsea drew 4-4 how much extra time was added because of goal celebrations? Today Chelsea’s game there was supposed to be at least 10 minutes of injury time. However, they only gave 8. I am quite sure that no time was added for each of Chelsea’s 3 goals celebrations. Where is the consistency?
If City’s goal was after 90 minutes then there was supposed to be at least 7 minutes of added time.

Ya know Referees have Digital Watches which they use to stop and start the time, which is why they have two watches almost always. It’s not rocket science, it’s just keeping time. So if the referee sees that he hasn’t reached 90 mins of playing time yet, than there’s still time to go.

The thing needs to be looked at though. The United fans response from fans I’ve talked to so far, have said it is at MINIMUM 4 added minutes, which is true, I have no argument with that. But if that is the rule(and it is) how about every ref starts following it? Remember the Champions League final 3 years ago? 3 minutes supposed to be added on, the ref blew for full time after 2:45. Doesn’t he know it’s a MINIMUM of 3 minutes?

Ryan, I agree completely. I saw it on EPL Talk where the time added up for this match. The problem is that refs don’t always follow it as strictly as was done today. Also, 7 goals by British players. How’s that, Mr. Platini?

That commentator is crazy.

According to Match of the Day (I haven’t confirmed this myself), the combined times for Man City’s goal celebration, the substitution, and the foul / yellow card by Carlos Tevez all added up to 1 minute 26 seconds, with the goal being scored at 95:27.
What’s to debate?

Well- it was way over 4 minutes. The ref was waiting for that goal or for City to come to close to an opportunity. Unfortunately, this is an ugly part of the beautiful game. The famous clubs get little extras. It is hard to care here, however, as City is just vying to do the same. Winning at all costs is a good book on the history of this sort of ‘miracle’ victory in the Italian game. I know not of such a book for England although I am sure one exists.

Al that is complete rubbish. There was nothing wrong with the timing, adding extra added time for further incidents is completely normal. And those are some pretty serious accusations. Yes United get some decisions go their way, but they get just as many against them.
