Is £5 enough to buy another world class player?
By: Bob | October 31st, 2006
They are off to a fine start in the English Premier League and they could very well advance to the knockout phase of the Champions League with a win today over Barcelona, but it is going to be a cold, sad winter for the Chelsea players. According to those in the know (or at least those in the know who gossip with the occasionally reliable Sun), Chelsea’s players have decided to forgo the usual ritual of buying each other expensive things for Christmas and will instead cap all gifts at a meager £5.
A club insider said: “The lads recognise they earn a hell of a lot and that Christmas is an expensive time for fans and their families.
“They didn’t want to be seen as rubbing noses in it and think it will be a giggle. Also, it makes life easier. What do you buy a team-mate who has everything anyway?”
There is no word is the £5 limit will apply to owner Roman Abramovich too, but surely that would make for a nice gift for the other teams in the Premiership if he agreed to limit his spending to that much during the winter transfer period.
