James McFadden’s Metatarsal Learns the Dangers of Head Tennis
By: Bob | January 25th, 2007
The mighty metatarsal has claimed yet another victim. The bone that all the cool kids break has put Everton and Scotland striker James McFadden on the shelf for an undetermined length of time. This is a tough break for Everton since they are also missing their striker Andrew Jennings due to an ankle injury. So how did McFadden join the list of players who have experienced a metatarsal malady? He did it playing head tennis.
For those unfamiliar with the fun of head tennis, it is essentially a game of tennis that you play with a football while you are waiting for your youth team coach to wake up from his alcohol stupor and show up for training an hour late. I speak from experience. I probably played 75,000 hours of head tennis between the ages of 12-15. The most dangerous aspect was always facing an opponent who would disregard the rules and try to nail you in the nuts. Ahhh to be a teenage boy.
I’ve been poking around looking for video of McFadden’s head tennis training injury and although I have been unsuccessful in this search the video below should give an indication of what it might have looked like.
