Kieran Richardson’s Rocket Wins the Tyne-Wear Derby for Sunderland

By: Daryl | October 25th, 2008

It had been 28 years since Sunderland beat Newcastle at home, a fact which made Kieran Richardson’s 75th minute free kick all the sweeter for Mackems fans.

Richardson struck the ball basically as hard as he could, but with killer precision and into the top left corner, leaving even a keeper of Shay Given’s reflexes with zero chance. Chris thinks it looks more like a glorified penalty kick.

The 2-1 win (Cisse and Ameobi had traded first half goals) prompted a celebratory post-match pitch invasion that might get Sunderland in some trouble with the FA. But (assuming no one was hurt) the club can claim derby win euphoria as a valid excuse.

No-one got hurt, but police are looking into it.

Brilliant free-kick and he deserved it after last week.
