Landon Donovan to Everton: Will “Landycakes” Finally Get the Respect He Deserves?

By: Daryl | December 9th, 2009

landon_donovan_apBack in August, I asked everyone Which European Soccer Team Would Suit Landon Donovan Best? Everton was not among the more popular suggestions, but it did get a mention.

Now it seems that employment at Goodison Park is about to become a reality for Donovan, with a loan move to Everton in January 2010 about to be signed, sealed and transatlantically delivered.

I’m going to be bold and make a prediction here. If this goes through, then Landon Donovan will finally shake the European transfer monkey off his back, and all those who’ve mocked him in recent years will be forced to eat some humble pie.

For those unaware of Donovan’s history, the 27 year old USA winger/attacking-mid/forward/all-time top-scorer/current MLS MVP already has three failed attempts at European club football under his belt. Twice with Bayer Leverkusen and once last January with Bayern Munich. Because of this (and for a few less tangible reasons, including this ill-advised photo) Donovan is perceived as somewhat soft, and hasn’t enjoyed the respect he deserves in the US. The “Landycakes” nickname and all that.

It’s somewhat understandable for fans unfamiliar with the US national team and MLS to overlook Donovan’s talent. But I still can’t understand why so many American fans continue to underestimate him. He’s fast. He’s smart. He’s skilled. He both scores and creates. He can play in multiple attacking positions. I’m not saying he’s Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi. But in my opinion he’s the USA’s most talented outfield player by some distance. He also has a great work ethic.

Maybe the problem is that some US fans look to European leagues and players as a yardstick to measure their own teams by, and so won’t take Donovan seriously until he’s had some success there. If so, then the loan move to Everton could be exactly what’s needed.

Everton are (or at least were until this season) a solid Premier League team. It’s a big enough platform to Donovan to impress, but also small enough that he’s won’t be battling against layer upon layer of expensive talent for a place in the first team. Assuming this loan move goes through, I fully expect Landon Donovan to make the most of it, make an impact, and finally get the respect he deserves.

This word is often confusing. It is sometimes used for a city, malarky, or a sandwich meat.
  • "But I still can’t understand why so many American fans continue to underestimate him."

Recently he has turned it around.

But because he couldn't cut it in Germany on 3 occasions (and then had the MLS changed its rules to come home to SJ), he was (and still is) lauded as our star player but did nothing in '06, he does that silly ceremony before PKs, etc etc.

@ Michael... are you trying to be funny? Lack of quickness? Landon Donovan may instantly become the "quickest" player on Everton's squad outside of Saha...???
  • Ha, just Googled "Landycakes" and see that you're right. Nice find Elliott. Obviously "Landycakes" is the most sort after keyword in all of football blogdome.

Other bizarre search engine domination areas include "Mourinho St Etienne manager" and, sadly, "David Beckham penis". And in case you're wondering, I only know that because of this post. Honest.

As for Landycakes, agree that he needs a permanent deal to prove the haters wrong. I'm just really optimistic that Everton's the right destination and that Donovan will do the business. At which point we'll have to rely on David Beckham's extremities to bring in all the pageviews.
  • Daryl - two things disturb me.

    1) This is a loan - just like last year and Bayern Munich. I want Dono to succeed, but he needs to show some "garra" and force a permanent deal.

    2) The title is some pretty cynical blogging. Yes, you are now king of the "landycakes" google keyword, but at what cost? ;)
  • hah. I guess I should direct my letter towards Daryl instead... but Laurie can get the memo too.

Can't see it working out. Doesn't appear to me that he's skilled or fast enough for the EPL, or that his strength could make up for his lack of skill/quickness relative to the weekly competition.
  • Dear Laurie,

I will not be eating any humble pie until he makes an actual impact for Everton. Until then, he is still just a Landycake.

  • Whew. Okay, now it's changed to some guy holding a digital device. Much better. As you were.
  • I'm finding that ad directly below the post -- with the video of the woman licking the mixer thingie -- highly disturbing. It's taking all my self-control not to click on it. Somebody put me out of my misery and tell me what it's for.
  • Johnny
I'm very curious where he's going to fit in.

I see him potentially filling into many roles.
  • Trevor
I wish him luck. It can only help the American game when American players (besides goalkeepers) enjoy success in Europe at high(ish) profile clubs.
