Man United’s Season Ticket Waiting List Has Dissolved

By: Ian Rose | August 15th, 2010

OldTraffordSeason tickets in the Premier League cost a pretty penny these days, especially at stadiums like Anfield and Old Trafford. But there is also big demand, and so several Premier League clubs have sold out of season tickets. This list includes Arsenal, Blackpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs, and notably does not include Manchester United. So much for that waiting list we all heard about last season.

The club is making some statements on tickets and attendance that just don’t seem to add up. Here are the numbers – you do the math yourselves. At the end of last season, United reported a 24,000-person waiting list for season tickets. Now, a day before the season starts, seats are still available. United has reported that no more than a few current season ticket holders have failed to renew. And yet, again, tickets remain.

Is it anti-Glazer sentiment keeping the fans away? Is it the economy? Have expectations for the season cooled off? Whatever the reason, that blue team across town must be enjoying the rare situation of having sold all their seats while some remain at Old Trafford. And all it took was a few dozen million pounds in transfer fees.

Not sure what you mean by seats still available. In the US at least, teams don't sell every seat as a season ticket. They keep some to sell on matchdays because they can be sold at a higher rate than the season ticket rate.

Sorry if it wasn't clear. Of the seats that are sold as season tickets, the teams listed in the article have sold out, and Old Trafford hasn't.
  • Did Manchester United increase the number of seats that are available for season tickets? And are all season tickets the same price (ie are the cheaper season tickets sold out while very expensive ones arent or vice versa?)
  • Ian
I'll admit - this is the level of detail at which my knowledge of Man United season tickets runs out. But those are very valid questions.
