Mido Is Not a One-Club-Man

By: Daryl | July 21st, 2007

Mido one clubMido must have itchy feet. The Egyptian striker looks all set to join Birmingham City from Tottenham for £6million, which is a bit of a gamble for a player who blows hot and cold. He has to leave Spurs though, being below Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe in the White Hart Lane pecking order. More interesting, Birmingham will be the nomadic 24 year olds 8th club since his career began in 1999. He played just a single season before moving on from Al Zamalek, Gent, Ajax, Celta Vigo, Marseille and then Roma. Then (by his standards) he settled down and spent two years at Spurs but now he’s probably on the move again to Birmingham.

Basically he needs to put some roots down, and these one-club men are great examples for Mido to try and follow:

Tony Adams (Arsenal 1984-2002)
Franco Baresi (AC Milan 1978-1996)
Giuseppe Bergomi (Inter Milan 1981-1999)
Trevor Brooking (West Ham 1966-1984)
Jack Charlton (Leeds United 1952-1973)
Teodoro Fernández (Universitario de Deportes 1931-1953)
Matt Le Tissier (Southampton 1986-2002)
Maurice Malpas (Dundee United 1979-2000)
Billy Wright (Wolves 1939-1959)
Lev Yashin (Dynamo Moscow 1949-1971)

That’s juts a quick sampling, many others can be found here.

There are a handful of long-serving players still active in the Premiership. Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have been with Mancester United since the ’90s,while John Terry and Steven Gerrard could conceivably stay with Chelsea and Liverpool respectively for the rest of their careers.

The daddy of them all though is Humood Sultan, who spent 24 years with the Muharraq Club in Bahrain from 1974 to 1998. But Paulo Maldini is hot on his heels, having been with AC Milan from 1984 to the present day, making that 23 years and counting.

I’m not sure about ‘gamble’. He is a player of ability and will score goals for Birmingham. The only slight problem is his attitude. As long as he doesn’t think he is bigger than the club (although possibly the best player there), he will do OK.
