Poll: Did Cristiano Ronaldo Dive or Did He Fall?

By: Daryl | September 29th, 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo got all the headlines after Man Utd’s 2-0 win over Bolton, mostly for the way he won Utd’s penalty (which he also converted.)

You can see what happened in the video above. Did Ronaldo dive? Or did he just innocently fall and Rob Styles was dumb enough to award a pen? Or maybe you agree with Styles and think Jlloyd Samuel actually fouled C-Ron. Vote below in our poll…

Based on Ronaldo’s lethargic celebration, I don’t think he was looking for a pen. But if you’re wondering why Styles pointed to the spot at all, then don’t worry. All is explained on Man Utd Offside.

Here’s a simple fact. When someone preforms a proper sliding challenge, 9 times out of 10 there is going to be significant contact and players will fall just because of the way the challenger’s legs hit the runner’s feet. That’s the way it works, and although Ronaldo is more than known for his diving, you can clearly see he trips over the challenging defender. He didn’t draw the penalty, thats just horrendous officiating.

It looks like there’s contact but it also looks like he’s taking a bit of a leap before contact happens…

Foul? No. Dive? No. A good tackle and a horrible call. I usually Bash CRyBaby7 allday, but I don’t think he dove here.

Slide tackling in the box is generally a bad idea. Sometimes, it ends up in a penalty, like we saw here today.

    But flashback to 2006.

Australia v Italy. Lucas Neil’s slide tackle in the box against Fabio Grosso.

:/ don’t slide tackle in the box.

firstly, Grosso was fouled and Italy deserved the penalty, but that’s besides the point.
Ronaldo DEFINATELY did NOT dive. But I can’t tell if it was a clean tackle that got the ball first, and then took Ronaldo out, and then the ref called it, or if it was a true foul.
Either way, Utd would have won, so what’s the point?

I agree that Grosso was fouled, and it was a penalty ala the rules.
