Premier League 2008/9 Predictions - Week 2

By: Daryl | August 22nd, 2008

How many scores did I get right last week? Absolutely none, that’s how many. But am I discouraged? Of course not. You see, it wasn’t my fault.

Turns out someone (not me) had forgotten to recalibrate the old crystal ball for the new season and it was still on the 2007/8 settings. But I’ve had the crystal ball tech guys come in and fix it now, so this week’s Premiership predictions are cast-iron guaranteed 100% accurate.

Unless they’re not of course.

Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Hull City
Great opening day for both these teams last week. And hate to get down on Hull. But I think going away from home and facing Roque Santa Cruz might be a rough journey. All eyes on Geovanni to see if he can perform again though.

Fulham 0-3 Arsenal
Maybe Hull weren’t as weak as we thought, but still an awful result for Fulham to lose that opening game. Arsenal may or may not have Samir Nasri today (possibly injured) but they’ve still got the usual powers - Fabrgas, Adebayor etc - to call on, plus that new French guy they got from Man Utd.

Liverpool 2-2 Middlesbrough
Don’t understimate ‘Boro. That’s all I’m saying.

Newcastle United 2-0 Bolton Wanderers
Were Newcastle really good last week or were Man Utd really bad? Hard to say. But were Bolton really good last week or were Stoke really bad? Pretty sure it was Stoke being bad. So based on that logic and the silky skills/hair of Jonás Gutiérrez I say two nil to the Toon.

Stoke City 1-4 Aston Villa
Wish someone could offer Stoke some hope, but Villa looked semi-rampant against Man City last Sunday, and the Ashley Young, John Carew, Gabby Agbonlahor combo will do bad bad things to Stoke’s defence.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Sunderland
Time for Luka Modric to show his true colours in the Premier League and orchestrate a home win for Spurs. Keep an eye out for Fabio Capello looking terrified in the stands.

West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Everton
West Brom lost their opening game to Arsenal, but weren’t horrible. Everton crumbled in injury time against Blackburn and looked to be relying on the kids to pad the a bit, so I can see WBA getting their first points here.

Wigan Athletic 1-4 Chelsea
No doubt about it, Chelsea looked lethal last weekend. And though Wigan will put up a fight, Chelsea will be just as lethal this weekend. Titus Bramble vs Deco? Not even fair.

Man City 2-0 West Ham
If Dean Ashton is still injured, that means West Ham are going to struggle. And - based on his cameo last week - 18 year old striker Daniel Sturridge is a boatload of goals waiting to happen for Man City. Hopefully we’ll see Vincent Kompany make his debut too.

Portsmouth 1-3 Man Utd
Pompey couldn’t deal with Chelsea last week and won’t be able to deal with Man Utd this week. Wayne Rooney to put a rough midweek game behind him and score.

Nasri has mysteriously shaken off that “injury” that kept him out the Fance game apparently.

My prediction is Agbonlahor to get another hat trick.
