Rooney gets 10Did you know Manchester United had no number 10 last season? The shirt has been vacant ever since Ruud van Nistelrooy’s unhappy Old Trafford exit. Step forward Mr. Wayne Rooney, who has swapped his number 8 for the more famous shirt, and couldn’t be happier about it.

“When I was offered the chance to wear the No 10 shirt I jumped at it,” said Rooney. “Some of the game’s greatest players have become legends wearing No 10 — none more so than Denis Law. He was crowned the King of the Stretford End during his time at the club and it is a great honour for me to wear a shirt that has such history behind it.”

Mark Hughes is another Old Trafford number 10 who deserves a mention. But that number isn’t just special at Old Trafford, it’s special everywhere.

It’s the number of Maradona and of Pele. It means you’re the playmaker, the go to guy, and it comes with a lot of responsibility. For those of us who enjoy seeing Rooney in full flight – which should be everyone, no matter who you support – let’s hope taking this shirt signals a new era of maturity. No more four letter tirades at referess and silly bookings, no more getting frustrated and lashing out. Just lots of beautiful football.
