Rumors of Liverpool’s Demise have been Greatly Inflated
By: Jan | October 25th, 2009Liverpool’s season has been given a new lease of life, after Fernando Torres struck in the 65th minute to put his club on the way to a 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
It was a deserved victory overall. Liverpool looked the more dangerous of the two sides and had wasted several opportunities to score earlier. Though, it wasn’t until N’Gog finished a counter in the 95th minute, that Liverpool could put the result beyond doubt. Antonio Valencia came closest to equalizing when firing a shot at the crossbar from an impossible angle late in the match. Manchester United enjoyed spells of good possession and looked dangerous on counter attacks but overall struggled to create chances. The referee struggled a bit to make big calls, waving away penalty and red card claims and triggering an all too predictable response. When Nemanja Vidic was eventually sent off for a second bookable offense and for the third consecutive time in this fixture, after bringing down Dirk Kuyt, it also started to look more and more likely, that the outcome of the match would become quite predictable for a third consecutive time as well.
“The only way to change things in football is to win games”, said Benitez after the match.
With beach balls intervening and several clubs challenging his side’s Big Four status, it must have been a welcomingly reassuring weekend for Rafael Benitez. Upstarts Tottenham, Aston Villa and Manchester City all dropped points. Thousands of fans marched in protest of the club’s American owners. Nemanja Vidic got sent off. Manchester United has been beaten. At least on this Sunday the world is back to normal in Liverpool.

Liverpool will win nothing this year and unless they win at Lyon I expect them to crash out in the group stages of the Champions League.
