Ryan Babel Is the New John Barnes
By: Daryl | September 30th, 2008Laurie already brought this to everyone’s attention in the Daily Dose, but I just couldn’t resist posting the video.
It’s Liverpool’s Ryan Babel doing some freestyle rapping – in his native tongue – on Dutch radio station 101Barz. Not sure why Babel chose the pseudonym Rio to rap under (certainly it’s no Drogabcite) but apparently Rio Ferdinand will soon release an RnB single under the name Ryan.
My Dutch language skills aren’t so hot, but here are the first four lines according to YouTuber id05id:
“Rappin’ is my hobby
Rappers don’t want trouble
I’m the Liverpool-star those bitches are giving me Love
I know what time it is, I’ve just buy a new watch”
Awesome.

A lotta words are precisely the same in both English and Dutch. Most of them you wouldn’t want your kids to overhear.

rap, rap, rap, hip hop etc. no other genres in the media nowadays, just rubbishy music?

Just because the Swiss don’t have any artful rappers doesn’t mean the rest of our countries don’t house some actual poets!

I don’t consider rap music or art, that’s all. And I’m quite disgusted at seeing how universal it has become.
For the record, I’m a Metal fan so I can’t listen to that stuff.Posted from

You’ve probably never listened to any real Hip-Hop.

Studying at an American High School, being bombarded with MTV and Hip-Hop on Radios, you think I’ve never listened to Hip-Hop? I have and that’s the reason why I hate it.
This is no place for music discussion though and I won’t continue this discussion since I’m a blogger here.Posted from

Ryan’s version of Snoop’s ‘Drop it like it’s hot’. Dunno if it’s been posted here before, but before this c*nt dived against us in the CL quarters last year, I used to find this pretty funny.Posted from

I am a big hip hop/rap head, and there is definitely more to it than what Babel is ‘rapping’ about. His freestyle is weak and such a cliché (money, no one can mess with him, etc)
Now I’m not as big a fan seeing how shallow he is

I didn’t say you never heard Hip-Hop Jan, I said you never heard REAL Hip-Hop. It is not oft found on MTV. The “music” you are describing is perfectly acceptable to detest, but I don’t write off Metal just because Dragonforce blows.

Marlon, undoubtedly there is underground music (I’ve been told about it) that doesn’t have that connotation of superficiality and materiality yet it doesn’t really matter, I don’t consider the genre music (and I’m not stating the universality of my assumption, it’s merely against my musical appreciation standards).
It’s like metal, I wouldn’t happily listen to Evanescence, I’d rather go for Epica.

UGH JAN you’ve been bothering everyone since Euro2008. Why don’t you make like a good Swiss person – stfu and be neutral.

It doesn’t look as if I’m bothering anyone (or is that your personal synonym for “expressing your opinion”?).

Who is this SwissJan clown? You’re going to tell me Illmatic, The Low End Theory, Mecca & The Soul Brother, amongst numerous other albums aren’t classic pieces of music — American or otherwise? Get the fuck outta here.

Oh no, watch out! It’s Ryan Babel the badass gangster… what an idiot.

Jack you may fail to appreciate that in continental Europe there is a significant number of individuals who are exasperated by the omnipresence of this genre, as conscious and thinking individuals with our own standards of art appreciation we do not join the world mass of hip-hopsters. You cannot impose it on us so don’t start thinking that listening to hip-hop should be natural. There are many other genres out there and I’m sure you hip-hop fans reject them or ignore them completely.
That’s it – end of the discussion.

“There are many other genres out there and I’m sure you hip-hop fans reject them or ignore them completely. ”
I agree with this statement SwissJan. I’m a big time hiphop fan and there a lot of genre’s of music i find completely boring and horrible, like metal.. so its only fair that you feel the same way about hiphop..
but dont make the assumption that just because you don’t like it, that is not an art and unnatural. Rap music has been the music of choice worldwide for the majority of the last 25 years..And it takes a very talented and gifted individual to do it well… and this very same thing can be said for all genre’s of music, so it all comes down to personal preference and what we relate to
