Sex Tapes, Blackmail and Prison: Just Another Day in the English Premier League

We’re a little late getting to this one, but that’s no reason not to share the sorry sorry tale of 22 year old goalkeeper Ashley Timms. Like all good yarns this one starts out optimistically, with Timms in the Manchester City youth system. The same youth system that’s produced plenty of first team players lately (Micah Richards, Michael Johnson, Joe Hart, Daniel Sturridge etc). But Timms wasn’t up to standard and City set him free.

And now comes the depressing bit. Like many an unemployed wannabe professional footballer Timms bounced around looking for a new team, but didn’t quite cut the mustard. So rather than learn a new skill (McDonald’s?) Timms decided the best way to make some cash was to blackmail one of his old teammates with a sex tape. Genius! Except it wasn’t, because now Timms is going to prison for 20 months.

Apparently Timms and the Man City player known only as Witness A (is that like Neville P?) were good mates, which is how Timms came into possession of three sex tapes featuring Witness A and a 19 year old lady friend making the (fully consensual I might add) beast with two backs.

So when Timms needed £15,000 for a deposit on a house, he tried blackmailing his (we assume ex) pal, demanding money or else Witness A joins Paul Jewell, Stefan Potsma and half the 2006 Sunderland team in sex tape infamy. Except someone at Man City called the fuzz. Because while sex tapes are a very very bad idea for Premier League footballers, they’re not illegal. And blackmail very much is. Timms clearly didn’t think that one through did he?
