Sheva Misses His Chance
By: Daryl | September 15th, 2007
Andriy Shevchenko finally got to play for Chelsea today. After scoring for Ukraine against Italy in midweek, and with Jose Mourinho’s first choice Didier Drogba out injured, the stage was set for Sheva to finally get his act together. Except he didn’t. In his first Premiership appearance of the season, Shevchenko missed a couple of opportunities, and generally failed to provide any threat as Chelsea drew 0-0 at home with Blackburn. And Mourinho doesn’t feel the need to explain to Shevchenko why he hasn’t been featuring lately. How about this for a quote: “If he says I gave him no explanation, then it is true.”
It’s no secret the Ukrainian striker was brought in above Mourinho’s head by Roman Abramovich, and I think the problem all along is that Mourinho doesn’t fancy Shevchenko as a player. He doesn’t really fit in the all action Didier Drogba mould of what Mourinho asks his strikers to do. And, like Sergei Rebrov before him, he may just not be suited to the hustle and bustle of the Premiership.
He’s never going to improve without the backing of his manager and a regular run of games, so I’d suggest the best thing for Sheva and for Chelsea would be for the striker to move on.
