Shrimps no More
By: Bob | November 7th, 2006
You can bet that the loyal fans of Southend are celebrating tonight. Not only do they get to support a team nicknamed the Shrimpers, but they also get to support a team nicknamed the Shrimpers that has knocked the Carling Cup holders Manchester United out of the competition. Freddy Eastwood is the Shrimp of the moment, knocking home a splendid free kick that you can see in the video below. Manchester United had a plethora of scoring chances, but the Premiership leaders couldn’t crack through against the team in the Championship basement. Holders Celtic also crashed and burned today, losing to Falkirk in the Scottish League Cup. What were we just saying about on any given day….?

bottom-of-championship Southend, also known as the Shrimps, shockingly beat the mighty Manchester United by a single goal to nil in Roots Hall. The home side caused the biggest upset in the cup (probably of all time) by sending the current-holders stumbling home with a great free kick and solid goalkeeping. A night the Southend fans will always remember!
