Son, Your Gran’s Dead. Oh, Sorry, Wrong Gran.

stephenireland.jpgStephen Ireland’s week started off pretty well. Over the weekend, he scored in Ireland’s 2-2 away draw with Slovakia in a Euro 2008 qualifier. But it’s been downhill since. Ireland – the man, not the country – received word that his maternal grandmother had died. Apparently the Man City man was quite close to his grandmother, who had done much to help raise young Stephen in County Cork. You can imagine his sadness.

What’s more, this meant that Ireland – again, the man, not the country – would have to pull out of the qualifying match against the Czech Republic to be held tomorrow.

This all caused great concern amongst Ireland’s family. Most notably, his maternal grandmother was quite shaken to learn that she was in fact dead.

In what can only be deemed a bizarre case of mistaken identity, someone had mistakenly informed Ireland and FAI that it was Stephen’s maternal grandmother. And so, he set out for Manchester in a private plan chartered by the FAI. But instead, it was his paternal grandmother who had died, in her London home.

AWK-ward!

At least he didn’t get the news on national TV.
