Steven Gerrard Can’t Miss, Even When He Does

‘Tis the season for bizarre own goals by keepers. First there was Paddy Kenny’s disaster against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup. Now there’s poor old Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

At first glance it looks like Steven Gerrard and his right foot have beaten Jaaskelainen at the near post from distance. But the replay shows Gerrard’s shot was going wide, only for Jaaskelainen to dive in the way and accidentally head into his own net.

Steven Gerrard’s slightly embarrassed celebration (hand over mouth, clearly feeling for Jaaskelainen) was appropriate for the occasion, but I’ll bet Ashley Cole would have ben off doing the airplane again.
