The Most Annoying Transfer Rumour of Summer 2009 is Now Dead
By: Daryl | July 27th, 2009
After what feels like forever, John Terry finally rediscovered his tongue this weekend, and put an end to all the Man City rumours. You can see the full quote here, but the most important seven words were as follows: “me leaving Chelsea was never a possibility”.
And that’s why – for myself at least – the whole John Terry to Man City saga was the most annoying of the summer. Chelsea were never going to accept a bid, and Terry was never ever going to leave. So it was never ever ever going to happen. Ever. And yet this non-story has still somehow dominated the sports pages for the past month.
You might think the C-Ron to Real deal was more frustrating as it rumbled on for 12 months+. But, tiresome as that story became, at least it had a chance of actually going through at some point, which kept it at least semi-interesting.
I remember writing a fairly grumpy post about this rumour back in early July, suggesting Man City shouldn’t be wasting everybody’s time. And I still feel the same. Man City can bid for whoever they want, but they have to recognize that some transfers just aren’t going to happen.
For transfers that might actually happen (or not) we’ve set up a new section of The Offside called Transfers Offside. It’s basically one page that collects all the transfer related stories from around The Offside team blogs into one place, so it’s a great place to visit if you want all the recent gossip at a glance.
