The Offside Fantasy League: Squeaky Bum Time?
By: Daryl | April 25th, 2008It’s the big Premiership game tomorrow: Chelsea vs Manchester United. Chelsea are just three points behind the leaders and welcome Man Utd to Stamford Bridge knowing that a win would put the two teams level on points. Goal difference is another matter, because Alex Ferguson’s men are 18 goals better off (they only played Derby twice, right?)
So Chelsea can’t go top tomorrow, but Avram Grant and co. can really put the pressure on Man Utd with a win. On the other hand, Fergie’s men know that a win for them would all but seal the title. And all this coming between Champions League semi-final games for both teams. So yeah, it’s big,
And just like Fergie and Grant, if you choose the right players tomorrow this game could mean big points for you in The Offside Fantasy League. So read on for some poorly informed guesswork to see which players could make the difference.
Chelsea
Michael Essien
The Ghanaian midfielder missed Tuesday’s game against Liverpool through suspension, but scored in Chelsea’s previous game against Everton and looks to be regaining some form. He’ll be one of the few big names who’s properly rested and will take the game to Man Utd.
Didier Drogba
Double D was isolated up front against Liverpool, and spent the evening trying to take long balls on his chest and getting knocked around by Jamier Carragher and Martin Skrtel. But with Chelsea going for a win or bust, expect Drogba to have a bit more support, possibly from…
Nicolas Anelka
We’ve yet to see the Nic-Drog combo put together effectively, and there’s no guarantee the Frenchman will start on Saturday. But if Avram Grant is serious about going for a win, he could do a lot worse than pair up two of the Premiership’s most dangerous strikers. Just saying.
Man Utd
Cristiano Ronaldo
You really should have C-Ron in your fantasy team anyway. He’s SquadGod’s top scoring player right now with 783 fantasy football points. And after his little disaster on Wednesday, Ronaldo will be out to prove a point. Don’t be too surprised if he does that with a goal.
Rio Ferdinand
More and more, Ferdinand is a man for the big occasion. His performance on Wednesday night, even without his usual buddy Nemanja Vidic, was proof of that, so a towering game with lots of tackles is likely on Saturday. For a cheaper option, you could also go with Wes Brown.
Wayne Rooney
Roonaldo looked absolutely miserable on Wednesday, playing more or less right wing back and rarely getting forward. Fergie has promised to make some changes, and one of those will surely be to let his freckly forward get up front where he can do some damage.

Surely a ManYoo win will seal the title, right? Unless we’re supposing that Chelsea suddenly start scoring six goals a game while the Devils lose by four or five to West Ham and Wigan?

It will, but it’s not official until it’s mathematically impossible for anyone else to win it. So no matter how implausible Chelsea winning the final two games 10-0 and Man Utd losing them 10-0 is, it could theoretically happen. So yes, Man Utd won’t officially be champions if they win on Saturday. But they may as well be.

I am not sure if I care (actually I really dont). This can turn out to be as spectacular as the CL semi between Pool and Chelsea

The big difference between this game and Pool vs Chelsea is that one team (Chelsea) has to win. So it should be a lot more open.
