The Top 10 2007/8 Premier League Goals of the Season?

By: Daryl | May 19th, 2008

Here’s what someone, somewhere decided were the 10 best goals in the Premier League this season.

In descending order:

#10 Luke Young for Middlesbrough vs Spurs
#9 Sebastian Larsson for Birmingham vs Spurs
#8 Stiliyan Petrov for Aston Villa vs Derby
#7 Sulley Muntari for Portsmouth vs Aston Villa
#6 Stephen Ireland for Man City vs Reading
#5 Dean Ashton for West Ham vs Man Utd
#4 Cristiano Ronaldo for Man Utd vs Portsmouth
#3 Emmanuel Adebayor for Arsenal vs Spurs
#2 Kevin Nolan for Bolton vs Blackburn
#1 Cristiano Ronaldo for Man Utd vs Aston Villa

First of all great video. I love the fact there aren’t endless slo-mo replays. Just ten goals: bang, bang, bang.

My personal faves on here are Petrov’s long range effort, just for the quick thinking and the fact that he hits it on the half-volley. It was against Derby though, so it doesn’t really count.

Got to love Adebayor’s goal against Spurs too. Just the way he lifts it with his first touch, turns and strikes. He’s in total control.

Kevin Nolan’s volley is nice too. For some reason I especially like the way he holds his arms out for balance before hitting it. Not entirely sure why, but I think it’s something to do with the calmness of his approach vs the ferocity of the shot.

And finally, C-Ron. No surprise to see him on here twice, but I’m not quite convinced that his cheeky goal against Villa was the goal of the season. Maybe because I’m not sure how deliberate it was. Did he really mean to nutmeg Martin Laursen? Or did he just get lucky?

No arguments about C-Ron’s free kick though. He definitely meant that.

I actually think Larsson's is the best of the season, what a beautiful strike it is. I'd put Adebayour's just behind.

    Tevez vs Villa?
    Keano vs Chelsea?

Did you notice how 3 of the top 10 were all against Spurs? No wonder Paul Robinson is no longer 1st choice for England.
  • If all you knew was what you saw on those highlights, you'd think no one in the Premier League knew how to dribble.
  • to bad christie ron-ron couldnt do #4 against Barca in tha CL! And its sucks that #5 was at Old Trafford, because that goal definitley deserved more than the occasionally muffled "f*** that" in the stands.

It's not how you score or that you scored , it's what you try. Ronaldo tried the impossible and scored. As for his free kick, sure Gerrard's was pretty but it was traditional. CRons is unorthodox and unpredictable for the GK. The ball doesn't even spin.

    Walcott's run + Adebayor's finish, anyone?

I HATE CR....i can't stress that enough. That said...thats a pretty damn cool goal, and I don't care if he meant to do it or not, so much about what he does looks lucky anyway, that I'm willing to suspend belief and agree that that was GotY.

Either that or I'm hating on Nolan for beating my boy Brad Friedel.

Agree with adebayors, ashtons and nolans as top 3 goals. Where was Tevez's goal against west ham?

I'm a United supporter, and there's no way in hell that's the goal of the season: I agree that Nolan and Adebayor's goals were FAR better. Ronaldo's goals only got on there because of the mindless-type of hype around the guy (Rochemback's parting goal for Boro on the last day of the season was a phenomenal free-kick; but nobody will ever even consider that being "the best free-kick ever", or whatever stupid accolade they gave CR7's kick).
  • Yeah, it's a cool goal, but not the goal of the year. My vote would be with Nolan, for the Zidane impression to the opposite corner. Adebayor second, Ashton third. The free kick from CRon was great, but I seem to remember Stevie Gerrard having a pretty decent one too, and free kicks are hard to compare to run-of-play goals.

I know I am a hater of CR7, but is that really the best goal of the year? It was nice and unexpected but involved a fair bit of luck. It looked mainly accidental. I think at least the Nolan and Adebayor goals should be in front of it.
