The World Awaits Cristiano Ronaldo’s Newest Trick

By: Bob | August 31st, 2006

cronhands.jpgFor a second there we were actually starting to appreciate the way Cristiano Ronaldo has been handling himself. He’s accepted the abuse he is going to receive when Manchester United is on the road and he’s played decent enough football the first few matches.

But then we come across comments like these, which allude to a new trick he is planning to give as a gift to the world:

The Portuguese ace told the Mirror:

“I will only try it when we are winning two or three nil, but I think you’re going to like it. I was planning to do it at the World Cup, but I was saving it for the Final.”

Bet you are wishing Portugal had made it to the Final now, aren’t ya?

Instead, we’ll have to wait until the next time Manchester United is up by a comfortable margin – likely the next time they play Arsenal – to see what we can only assume will be a trick that involves a) a crossover move b) a roll on the ground c) a pout.

Just a wild guess but I bet it involves some serious wanking.

Bob - I feel your values man, but the game has changed.

    C. Ronaldo is what people want to see, now. You don’t see raw talent like that often and I think he will grow and prove himself over time. Unfortunately, he is also a product of his somewhat flashy and superficial MTV generation - diamond studs and all. Marketers eat that crap up. There’s an awful lot of money invested in C. Ronaldo and he knows it. If I were a stakeholder, I would be very happy about that.

We can’t have it both ways. We idolize them and pump them up into icons (brands), yet we expect them to be humble like the kid next door. I’m ok with some flash as long as he plays for the team first and doesn’t write some stupid serialized autobiography!

Tricks or not, there will be more finals for Portugal. That, you can bank on.

I can’t wait to see it. He is a player who has the full reportiore of tricks but can also inovate and create something new.

Showboating *should* be left until your comfortably ahead and should be considered as the “icing on the cake”.

The guy just said he has a new trick and everybody made a newsflash about it… ;-)

One of these days he farts and the world says “C Ronaldo has a new fart, maybe he’ll use it next time when he dives…”. And then the english will say “Rooney had no choice than to step on his balls… Did you smell that cheat C Ronaldo’s fart…?”

Even if everybody keeps on calling him a cheat and/or diver, the truth is that everybody’s following him… And loves to see him. Moreover in times when “defense rules”, in WC’s… Know what…? Before the WC, the blog was discussing Messi vs Rooney… After the WC, miles and miles of ink were spent in blaming C Ronaldo (for things most people didn’t really understood or had no connection with reality whatsoever), but at the same time all that ended up putting the spotlights on him, more than any new trick… ;-)

There’s no such thing as bad publicity… :-)
