Tony Blair says it’s Logical for Premiership Clubs to Cut Ticket Prices
By: Bob | February 27th, 2007
Forget the war. Never mind the health care system. No need to talk about crime. When it comes to politics in Great Britain it is always smart to stick to the important issues, like what should be down about the cost of tickets in the English Premier League.
Weighing in on the issue today at his monthly press conference, Prime Minister Tony Blair heeded the siren call of populism.
“Anyone who watches the Premiership can just notice, in the past year or couple of years, the rows of empty seats,” he said at his monthly press conference.
“It’s something I do not recall seeing in the same way four or five years back so I think there are very sensible market-based reasons for people to make sure the ticket prices aren’t beyond the reach of the ordinary fan.
“After all, it’s the ordinary fan that really builds the club. It’s a decision for them but I think the logic of it is pretty clear.”
Who couldn’t agree with that? Certainly not the fans who have to mortgage their homes just to attend matches. Certainly not the players who much rather would be playing in front of a full stadium than one half empty. Certainly not the clubs who…well, maybe the clubs would have an issue with politicians telling them how to run their businesses, but that is beside the point, isn’t it?

I’ve been noticing this recently as well. Some clubs are massive and will always have insance ticket demand. Some clubs are just in the Prem for a cup of coffee before heading back to the Championship. But there are lots of other clubs that fall in the middle somewhere.
