Wayne Rooney Escapes Metatarsal Mishap at NBA Game
By: Bob | December 12th, 2006
Move over Spike Lee, there’s a new celeb filling those outrageously expensive Madison Square Garden courtside seats and watching the outrageously awful New York Knicks play basketball. Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and his girlfriend Colleen McLoughlin took in an NBA basketball game on Monday night with the actor Jimmy Fallon keeping a close eye on and a safe distance from Rooney’s pugilistically prone fists. It was Rooney’s foot, however, that ended up being the story of the night.
From the Staten Island Advance newspaper:
One of the most famous right feet in the world barely avoided a catastrophe when Paul Pierce fell on it last night, a landing that was almost felt on the other side of the Atlantic ocean. Pierce, lunging for a first-half loose ball, crashed over the right foot of Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney, who was sitting courtside during the Knicks’ 97-90 loss to the Celtics last night.
The soccer star broke the foot last Dec. 31 and missed the beginning of the World Cup this summer in Germany and it became the focus of attention around the world during his recovery. It almost did again last night as the 6-foot-8 Pierce crashed into it.
“It was scary,” Rooney said with a laugh. “He rolled right over my foot.”
Rooney went on to say that he wouldn’t rule out playing in the United States towards the end of his playing career. This promptly led the Homeland Security to put the nation on red alert and to warn citizens of New York that they might want to avoid going out on the town the next few nights.
