Gianfranco Zola Turns Down Abramovich… Again

By: Daryl | October 7th, 2007

Not many people say no to Roman Abramovich, probably because of all that money. But little Gianfranco Zola has apparently turned down the Russian for a second time. The Italian was offered the chance to join Chelsea’s coaching staff (which is looking a bit thin after Jose Mourinho took all his compatriots with him) but after consulting with ex-teammates, who advised him that all is still not well at Stamford Bridge under Avram Grant, Zola declined.

Abramovich had initially tried to keep Zola on the playing staff when he bought Chelsea in 2003 and offered him a hefty pay increase. But Zola didn’t want to go back on his word after already agreeing to join Cagliari.

It was a wise move to try and get Zola on board after events of the last two weeks. He’s a massive fan’s favourite thanks to everything in the video above, and this is certainly a more subtle and meaningful gesture from Abramovich than standing in the away end at Fulham surrounded by semi naked fat mean (and, of course, body guards.) So ashame for Chelsea fans that this didn’t work out, but at least it suggests Abramovich is trying.
