Kanu seals the FA Cup and Europe for Portsmouth

By: Ian Rose | May 17th, 2008

Congratulations to Portsmouth on winning their first FA Cup in 69 years. It came courtesy of this goal by Kanu just before halftime. It would be the only goal of the game in what neutrals might call a somewhat forgettable match, but Pompey fans won’t soon forget it.

We’ve said it before, but the old Cup gained a little magic back this season, and it will be another few years before fans dismiss it as preordained for one of the Big Four, the way many did at the start of this campaign. For the first time since 1991, those four superclubs of England got their hands on exactly zero domestic cup trophies. Pompey gains not only a lovely piece of silverware today, but also a bid to the UEFA Cup, joining 5th place league finishers Everton, league cup winners Spurs, and (barely) Fair Play bid winners Manchester City. Cardiff misses out on their longshot route to Europe, but now at least the decision has been made that if they do go ahead and win the Cup at some point in the future, a UEFA Cup bid will be theirs.
