New England Kit Unveiled, Literally

By: Daryl | February 4th, 2008

With his first England squad all named and ready to go against Switzerland on Wednesday, Fabio Capello did his first bit of commercial PR work for his new Football Association paymasters. There are only so many variations on “red away shirt” that Umbro can come up with, so nothing to get too excited about. But you have to admire the dramatic and very literal unveiling, as the curtain drops and Capello stands there grinning in his seemingly permanent dark suit flanked by Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen, all dressed up in the new garment.

I like it. Reminds of the 1980s England ones. Though I agree they are running out of ideas.

  • A commercially motivated switcheroo wouldn't be a huge surprise, though there's no official word.

What's the point of this unveiling before the Switzerland game? Surely England will be playing in their regular white kits against the Swiss team in their traditional red kits. Or will there be a switcheroo for the sake of some merchandise sales?

I first thought the Revolution had new jerseys when I saw the headline...just saying.
  • Yep. There must be a law of diminishing returns here. If you change your kit every couple of years, eventually there are only hideous designs left.
  • i was so worried that the italians and americans would be the only one with hideous jerseys, but luckily i was wrong.
