Rochdale Fans Provide Some Over-Soil Heating

By: Daryl | February 20th, 2008

frost on grassWith some low, low temperatures in England recently, more than one league game has been called off due to frozen pitches. The richer clubs can combat the problem with under-soil heating, but English League Two side Rochdale don’t have anything so fancy, they have fans instead. Very committed fans, who braved the cold yesterday to try and thaw out Rochdale’s frozen solid pitch.

Apparently 40 oil drums were scattered across the playing surface as fans and groundstaff burned wood and coal in a valiant attempt to soften up the playing surface so the game against Notts County could go ahead.

It didn’t quite work, and the game was postponed. Seems fan powered over-soil heating is no match for mother nature, but great effort anyway from the Rochdale fans. At least now we know what the exact opposite of the prawn sandwich brigade is. “Our fans have proved they are simply the best and we can’t thank them enough,” said Rochdale chairman Chris Dunphy. They’re not giving up either, and are back at work trying to defrost the pitch again in time for Saturday’s game against Wycombe Wanderers.
