Sheffield Wednesday Fans try to Set World Air Guitar Ensemble Record
By: Bob | January 22nd, 2007
After the video evidence is reviewed, the witnesses interviewed and the controversies are resolved, Sheffield Wednesday fans might find themselves listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for taking part in the largest Air Guitar Ensemble in recorded history. The stunt was inspired by the 80s Butt Rock band Saxon who tried to rally the 30,000 fans at halftime despite the home team’s 2-nil deficit against Sunderland.
Here is how Saxon described what went down.
At 3:45 half time Amanda, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, SAXON, Sheffield Wednesday fans and Sunderland fans broke the world record for the biggest air guitar esemble. The band were having some fun with it and taking it all not too serious, which is good. Official infos will follow from the Guinness world record people. A big ‘thank you’ to all the fans joining us in shitty weather and bad half time result.
Which slightly different than what you’ll find in the papers.
WHEN a world record air guitar attempt went embarrassingly wrong at Hillsborough, 80s rock band Saxon had nowhere to hide from the humiliation as they strummed in the centre circle.
And if Saxon were left disappointed by the unanimous failure to persuade a 29,000-plus crowd to play air guitar to their latest track, then that was nothing compared to the dis-satisfaction emanating from Keane a little over an hour later.
Now you can see why the video review will be so important in establishing which story is correct. Were there actually 30,000 people pretending to be on Wayne’s World or were there a handful of folks who were too drunk to realize that no one else was paying attention to the commands of a washed up 80s band? The folks at Guinness are likely to have the last say in the matter.
Here’s a classic moment in Air Guitar history that surely would have gotten those fans all fired up.
