Steve McClaren Says We’re Ruining Beckham
By: Laurie | January 22nd, 2008
According to former England coach Steve McClaren, MLS should feel guilty. Our crime? Ruining David Beckham for international play.
Apparently we are so sub-standard over here that he’ll soon be fit for nothing. Particularly not for England. Because, y’know, they’re so good. And because if someone’s skills decline, age has nothing to do with it. And because Becks has played so darn much over here that we’ve had ample opportunity to destroy his form.
“David has gone from Real Madrid to a club in America where the sport is still at its beginnings,” said the former Middlesbrough and England coach.
“The MLS is developing but it’s not of the standard required for international football. I know David will keep himself fit, but it’s going to be very difficult for him to continue playing for England.”
This would be the same Steve McClaren, you’ll remember, who this summer, while he was trying to save his job and mend fences with Becks, famously called MLS equivalent to “lower premiership, upper Championship.”
I would find this a whole lot more credible if McClaren hadn’t recently lost his job for being unable to make something of the England team.
