The Biggest Losers
By: Daryl | July 29th, 2007
Notts County are officially the biggest losers in English football. The Magpies have amassed an incredible 1,704 defeats in their 145 years as a club, which sounds a lot worse than it is. Because Notts County are not just England’s, but the world’s oldest professional team (since 1862) they’ve basically had more time to lose games than any other team. Though their recent fall from the top flight in 1992 (relegated the season before the Premiership came into existence) all the way down to League Two (fourth tier) probably hasn’t helped any.
For the record, the top (or should that be bottom) 10 teams by losses looks like this:
1. Notts County 1,704 defeats
2. Grimsby Town 1,699
3. Bury 1,659
4. Lincoln City 1,649
5. Burnley 1,633
6. Stockport County 1,628
7. Barnsley 1,602
8. West Brom 1,601
9. Bolton Wanderers 1,594
10. Leyton Orient 1,589
Good news for Notts County fans is that their long history has seen them amass a few wins too, and they currently stand a very respectable 17th in this all-time English football table with 4771 points.

Oh well. At least they’ve got an FA Cup (1894), the first one that a non-top-tier team ever won. That ought to keep you warm for the intervening 103 years, eh? That and knowing you’re still 8,300 losses behind the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ah yes, the Phillies… the professional sports team (of ANY sport, around the world) with the most losses. PERIOD.
