Your Sympathies Please for Paddy Kenny
By: Daryl | February 28th, 2008Making a defensive error that costs your team a goal is a horrible feeling. I know this from experience. Scoring an own goal is even worse. I know this from experience too. Making a mistake that knocks your team out of a cup competition is worse still, because there’s no coming back from that. Again, been there and done that.
But I’ve never done all three of these things at once, and definitely never done all three while wearing goalkeeping gloves. Like Paddy Kenny did yesterday.
Sheffield United made it to extra time in their Fifth Round replay against Middlesbrough, and it was anyone’s game. Then Mido’s shot deflected off Chris Morgan, wrongfooted Kenny and hit the bar. Luckily the ball rebounded right to Kenny, but the keeper inexplicably palmed the ball into his own net instead of catching it.
The look on Kenny’s face as he lies flat on his back says “Oh bollocks. I’ve just knocked my teammates out of the FA Cup after they’ve battled for 180 minutes plus against Premiership opposition.” Which is actually pretty accurate.
So your sympathies please for Mr. Paddy Kenny.
