Your Sympathies Please for Paddy Kenny

Making a defensive error that costs your team a goal is a horrible feeling. I know this from experience. Scoring an own goal is even worse. I know this from experience too. Making a mistake that knocks your team out of a cup competition is worse still, because there’s no coming back from that. Again, been there and done that.

But I’ve never done all three of these things at once, and definitely never done all three while wearing goalkeeping gloves. Like Paddy Kenny did yesterday.

Sheffield United made it to extra time in their Fifth Round replay against Middlesbrough, and it was anyone’s game. Then Mido’s shot deflected off Chris Morgan, wrongfooted Kenny and hit the bar. Luckily the ball rebounded right to Kenny, but the keeper inexplicably palmed the ball into his own net instead of catching it.

The look on Kenny’s face as he lies flat on his back says “Oh bollocks. I’ve just knocked my teammates out of the FA Cup after they’ve battled for 180 minutes plus against Premiership opposition.” Which is actually pretty accurate.

So your sympathies please for Mr. Paddy Kenny.

  Paddy Kenny is a good goalkeeper and he is partial to getting his eyebrow bitten off on a nite out in Barnsley…. oh yeah thats where I have heard of Barnsley before…. see if I can get my eyebrow bitten off next Saturday.. anyway the game last night was worse than Chelsea’s performance in the Carling Cup final but Kenny didn’t deserve what happened to him. He kept Utd in the game. No he really did!!!

  Perhaps he can take solace from the fact that he had to make a play at the ball or else the approaching Boro striker would have scored. Shame his first touch let him down. But anyone that’s played air hockey knows how you can overreact when sudden deflections change the direction and speed of the target.

  Horrible mistake by a good keeper. Paddy, don’t let that define you. P.S. Tell your teammates to score a bloody goal in the first 90 minutes.

  Sympathy? For Paddy Kenny? I was hoping for the entertainment of penalties, but the public humiliation of one of English footballs biggest prats topped even that.

  He’s been in trouble “out on the town” a number of times, and is also very overweight. Basically I just don’t like him, and I’m not normally a judgemental or vindictive person (honest). Paddy Kenny - where’s your burger van? Don’t drop your burger! Don’t drop your burger… etc.

  sooooooo many posts from the states, like you know owt about proper football. you dont know the difference between barnsley and halifax!!! how many of you are gaining your living from prof football. none i would imagine. i know we in the west have free speech but shut up if you are gonna post crap.
