Jay DeMerit Sings Soccer Rocks

By: Bob | October 16th, 2006

demeritt36ol.jpgThe newest flavor of the month in the American soccer scene is Watford defender Jay DeMerit who has inexplicably risen from the obscurity of Sunday pub league matches to a spot in the English Premiership (albeit a spot that saw him get burned this weekend against Thierry Henry this weekend).

His is a great story that has the makings of a Disney movie written all over it.

If there ever is a movie made about DeMerit’s life, I can only hope that it includes a bit of his own singing. You see, as the good folks at I Dislike Your Favorite Team have unearthed, DeMerit is all about rock, Soccer Rocks ( crank up your speakers, hit the “listen” button in the upper right corner and rock out to the greatest soccer song sung by an American player since Duece Dempsey kept it real).

  • Hi Alexi - long time no talk. hey, your wrong about Jay. He is a very good singer and you sound worse than William Hung. for real.

  • JG

Alexi Lalas (Poser) - Are you a hater?

Never said he was an American Legend, just not gonna let you talk like you are the greatest player in US history... You're the one who said you could STILL "eat him up on the pitch"

BTW did you ever see that goal he scored?

  • Alexi Lalas

JG - Are you Jay DeMerit? No one can be that big a fan other than his parents maybe. Like I said, he is a nice player and his story is great. Time will tell if he turns into an American legend. Let him earn a cap or two and see how he does on the biggest stage.

  • JG

All time has told me was that he has used his determination and ability to make his way up to playing well in the BEST league in the world in a matter of 3-4 years with help from NO ONE.

How many game winning goals have you scored in front of 65,000 people to earn your club @45 million pounds and a spot in the EPL?

Put his story (in Sports Illustrated this week) up vs. yours.

I'd hate to have to post links to UTUBE clips of you getting throttled in friendly's, world cup match's, and in the early days of the MLS(prolly not any clips of those cause I don't even think those games were taped or on TV??).

BTW I know there are multiple U Tube clips of that goal I write about above... I can post that link since I'm sure you haven't seen it because you're so sheltered from good futbol in the MLS front offices...

  • Alexi Lalas

Let's talk how great he is after he earns 96 caps and plays in Serie A or even sticks in EPL for more than a season. He is a nice player, but time will tell how good he really is.

  • JG

You can have the recording studio, but I expect that you have seen maybe one game of DeMerit's plus maybe a highlight?? I have seen many of your appearances (MLS and Int'l) and many of Jay's and I must say you are mistaken. You have never "eaten his lunch" in the past and all you have is your ego to fool you into thinking you could today. Too bad the MLS ppl can't just admit they dropped the ball with Jay. Hopefully the next MNT coach will pick up the pieces and let him start playing center back for the U.S. where he should be.

  • Alexi Lalas

Good to hear about the proceeds are going to cancer research. That is a nice gesture. But I would still eat DeMerit's lunch on the pitch and in the recording studio :-)

  • JG

C'mon Lalas had a video game made in his likeness for the Sega Genesis or somethin... I'm sure if he were playing today he'd have EA Sports breaking his door down to make a game for him.... Prolly playing for Rochester... lol

And his commentary is sub par at best, in one of the friendlies with Everton or Chelsea he attempted to make a point that the MLS is a better league than the EPL... Now that's COMEDY!!

  • BDP

Haha - I'm sure that you're not the real Alexi Lalas (prolly just a stupid "screen name") but if you are the real guy - you should't talk, your commentating is as bad as your ball control used to be.

Hmmm I often wonder how good Alexi Lalas would be if he would have played in modern times - prolly be stuck in the A-League.

  • JG

The proceeds from the song are being entirely donated to Cancer Research. This was in no way a serious attempt to break into the music biz... A couple of Jay's friends own an indie music label and wanted to record a cheesy '80's song that pays tribute to Watford. A club that had the foresight to give Jay a shot, where NO club in the MLS even drafted him.

  • Alexi Lalas

Soccer rocks, but DeMerit sure does not. Stick to your day job, Jay.

  • That is the worst "music" I've ever heard.
