Moritz Volz: Man of Mullets and The Hoff
By: Bob | August 18th, 2006
In a modern age where footballers are seemingly raised as robots without personality, it is always refreshing to read about a guy like Fulham fullback Moritz Volz. Not only does he ride a folding bike around London when he isn’t driving a 6-year-old Golf and not only is he in school studying French and math, but he also maintains an amusing website that among other things makes fun of his fellow Germans’ propensity towards mullets.
If you take Volz at his word, Germans are humourless, mullet-permed, pool-bombing cherry-stone spitters. Does he really believe that? “I don’t think you could say that for every German, but it wouldn’t be on my website if it didn’t fit the bill for a lot of them. We were in Germany pre-season and there were some shocking hairdos. It doesn’t make me proud.”
And then there is this explanation as to why he has an entire section of his website dedicated to the Hoff:
“Being German, I love David Hasselhoff. It’s actually the law back in the Motherland. For me the Hoff is almost like some kind of higher spirit. Hoff-ness is everywhere. The Hoff is a big inspiration – in times of trouble I often ask myself, ‘how would The Hoff deal with this situation?’”
Yes, it is not every day that a footballer draws upon The Hoff for inspiration and perhaps this is why we will be rooting for Volz this season.
